International Coastal Cleanup Day

Each year, International Coastal Cleanup Day unites millions of volunteers worldwide to remove and document litter from coastlines, rivers, lakes, and waterways. What began over 30 years ago as a grassroots effort led by the Ocean Conservancy has evolved into a global movement spanning more than 100 countries. This annual event fosters community collaboration with the shared mission to reduce marine debris and protect our aquatic environments.

Why Coastal Cleanups Matter

• Plastic pollution and toxic waste in waterways threaten human health by contaminating drinking water and seafood supplies.

• Wildlife often mistake litter for food, leading to injury or death for marine animals.

• Participating in cleanups helps build stronger community bonds and raises awareness about environmental stewardship.

• Clean beaches and waterways support tourism and recreation, which are vital to many local economies.

Local Groups Making Waves

At Budget Dumpster, we proudly support International Coastal Cleanup Day by partnering with organizations dedicated to removing trash from our oceans and waterways. Over the years, we have collaborated with groups like Keep Lee County Beautiful, SeaGrant, and Keep Martin Beautiful, helping remove thousands of pounds of debris. Our commitment to community and environmental health continues year-round through support of revitalization projects nationwide.

This year, we're excited to support:

Missouri River Relief

Since 2001, Missouri River Relief has mobilized over 27,000 volunteers to remove more than 940 tons of trash from the Missouri River. Beyond cleanup efforts, they provide valuable educational programs for students and educators focused on river conservation.

Friends of Great Salt Lake

Established in 1994, Friends of Great Salt Lake works tirelessly to protect the lake’s delicate ecosystem. Through advocacy, education, and research, they aim to increase public understanding and appreciation of this vital natural resource.

How to Host a Safe Solo or Small Group Coastal Cleanup in 2025

Looking to take part in International Coastal Cleanup Day safely and responsibly? Here are updated steps recommended by The Ocean Conservancy:

1. Choose a quiet, less crowded location to maintain safe social distancing.

2. Gather essential supplies: masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, trash grabbers, trash bags, closed-toe shoes, and a reusable water bottle.

3. Use the Clean Swell app to log the type and amount of litter you collect — every piece counts!

4. Carefully collect and dispose of trash while protecting yourself and others.

5. After cleanup, safely remove gloves, wash your hands thoroughly, and sanitize your gear.

6. Record all collected data accurately in the app.

7. Dispose of trash properly in designated bins or waste facilities.

8. Share your cleanup story and photos on social media using #CleanOn to inspire others!

Together, even small actions add up to a big difference for our planet’s waters. Join the movement, protect your local waterways, and help ensure cleaner, healthier oceans for future generations.
